A Historical Odyssey:
The Transpac Race, short for Transpacific Yacht Race, was first held in 1906 and has since become one of the most celebrated offshore yacht races on the planet. The race spans a distance of approximately 2,225 nautical miles, starting from Point Fermin in Los Angeles, California, and ending at Diamond Head in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Originally conceived as a friendly challenge between two yacht clubs, the Los Angeles Yacht Club and the Honolulu Yacht Club, the Transpac Race quickly gained recognition as an ultimate test of seamanship and sailing prowess. The inaugural race featured three competing yachts, and the course was completed in a little over twelve days.

Past Highlights:
Over the years, the Transpac Race has witnessed remarkable achievements, fierce rivalries, and unforgettable moments. Here are a few standout highlights that have left an indelible mark on the race's legacy:

Record-Breaking Performances: In 2017, several race records were shattered. Ken Read, the skipper of Jim Clark's VPLP 100 Comanche, achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new elapsed time record for the Merlin trophy, completing the course in 5 days, 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 26 seconds, with an impressive average speed of 18 knots.  Furthermore, favorable conditions during the race allowed H.L. Enroe to establish a new multihull elapsed time record on his ORMA 60 trimaran Mighty Merloe, completing the course in 4 days, 6 hours, 32 minutes, and 30 seconds, with an average speed of 21.7 knots.

Barn Door Trophy: The Barn Door Trophy is awarded to the monohull yacht that finishes the race with the fastest elapsed time, excluding any powered assistance. In 1997, Roy E. Disney's "Pyewacket" clinched the trophy, completing the course in a then record-breaking 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes, and 27 seconds.

Classic Battles: Throughout the race's history, intense rivalries have emerged, leading to captivating duels on the open ocean. One such memorable encounter occurred in 1977 when a highly anticipated duel unfolded between Windward Passage, skippered by Bob Johnson, and Merlin, owned and skippered by Bill Lee. The two boats represented different design philosophies, with Windward Passage being a traditional heavy displacement boat and Merlin being a lightweight, innovative boat. This rivalry showcased the clash between traditional and modern design concepts. Merlin set a record by finishing in 8 days, 11 hours, and 1 minute, beating Windward Passage’s 1971 record by over 22 hours.
